Transfer Students

Transfer Admission Requirements

Transfer Applicants

The University of Memphis welcomes applications from students who have begun college elsewhere.  Future Tigers, if you have questions please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation at: Contact Us!

All transfer applications are assessed on a holistic review of criteria. All information provided in support of an applicant, including both academic and non-academic factors, are considered during a comprehensive review of every application. The Admissions Committee evaluates each applicant to determine if there is sufficient evidence to suggest that the student is capable of success at the University of Memphis. At times, more information may be requested by the committee to help make a better, more informed decision.

Transfer Applicants with Less than 15 Earned Transferable Credit Hours

Students who are transferring with less than 15 earned transferable credit hours of college-level coursework may be reviewed using the following criteria:

  1. May be required to submit a high school transcript and standardized test score.
  2. Have earned at least a 2.00 GPA (as computed by the University of Memphis) on all attempted college level and developmental or remedial courses. Students who meet the high school requirements, but do not have a 2.00 GPA on attempted college coursework may be considered for admission. The admissions review committee may conusult with the Center for Academic Retention and Enrichment Services to discuss the potential for sucess. Students’ major, types of courses taken, and pattern of progress as well as high school records and standardized test scores, will be considered in the admissions process.
  3. Be in good standing with the college or university previously attended.

Transfer applicants who have been academically dismissed from the last institution they attended but meet the GPA requirements listed above will not be considered for admission until at least one regular semester (fall or spring) has elapsed. After this period, these applicants must submit a new application (no additional fee required).

Transfer Applicants with 15 Credit Hours or More

Students who are transferring with 15 credit hours of college-level coursework or more must meet one of the following criteria to be considered for admission:

  1. Have earned a minimum overall combined 2.00 GPA (as computed by the University of Memphis) on all transfer hours attempted.

NOTE: Students who have failed any developmental or remedial coursework will not be eligible for admission until they have completed these courses with a passing grade.

  1. Have earned an associate degree in a University Parallel or University Transfer program from a regionally accredited community, junior, or senior college with an overall combined 2.00 GPA (as computed by the University of Memphis).

Tennessee Transfer Pathways

Students who begin at one of the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) Community Colleges have the ability to transfer to the University of Memphis with assurances in how their credits will transfer. By completing the Associates Degree (AA or AS) at one of the 19 Community Colleges, they can select one of the nearly 30 Tennessee Transfer Pathway (TTP) programs at the University of Memphis.

Reverse Transfer

Tennessee Reverse transfer allows transfer students who are currently attending a four-year school to combine four-year college credits with community college credits to receive an associate’s degree.  You may view further information in the Reverse Transfer pamphlet located here:  Reverse Transfer

Credit Transferred from Other Institutions

  1. Transfer Credit for Previous Instruction

Credit from post-secondary institutions will be granted and applied toward degree requirements only when it is for courses that are substantially equivalent to those offered at the University of Memphis. Credit not equivalent to courses at the University of Memphis may be posted to the student’s record and may be used as elective credit or as determined by the dean of the college from which the student is to graduate. After the student has been approved for admission as a regular undergraduate, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation will evaluate credit for University-wide use. The office of the dean in each college has the authority for determining the use of acceptable credit toward specific degree programs in that college.

The University of Memphis accepts transfer credit for college-level courses taken at accredited institutions of higher education. Student petitions for transfer credit for courses completed at institutions that are not regionally accredited are considered on a case-by-case basis. The student must present a petition in writing to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation at the University of Memphis with a list of courses for which credit is desired. The student must provide transcripts from the institutions, documentation from each course that includes the course content, course level, contact minutes, the standards for assessing student work, and documentation of the academic credentials of the course instructor. Based on an examination of these materials and after consultation with the appropriate academic department or college, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation will review the student’s petition and provide confirmation of those courses that have been approved for transfer credit.

  1. Earning Transfer Credit after Enrollment at the University of Memphis

University of Memphis students considering taking courses at other institutions should consult the transfer articulation tables to see how the course will transfer to the University of Memphis. For institutions and courses that are not listed on those tables, students must complete a Transfer Credit Request Form to determine if and how the course will transfer to the university. Students should consult with their academic advisor to determine how the credit will count toward their degree program. An approved Transfer Credit Request Form serves as assurance that the course will transfer. Students do not have any guarantee that courses not listed on the articulation tables will transfer or how they will count toward the students’ degrees without an approved Transfer Credit Request Form and notification to the academic advisor.

Before credit earned at another institution can be transferred and recorded on a permanent academic record, the student must have an official transcript from the institution mailed to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation .

The maximum credit hour load allowed for any term includes all course enrollments both at the University of Memphis and any concurrent enrollment at other institutions. (See “Credit Hours and Maximum Load”)

  1. Transfer Credit for Distance Education

Credit from other institutions for distance education courses taught by independent study, on-line computer instruction, or other methods, is evaluated in the same manner as transfer credit for classroom-based instruction. As with other transfer credit, students enrolled as regular undergraduates must seek prior approval from the dean of the college from which they are to graduate before taking courses to meet degree requirements at the University of Memphis.

Transfer Equivalency Service(TES)

Evaluation Process

At the University of Memphis there are two situations where it would be necessary to have a transfer credit evaluation completed.

  1. New transfer students to the University of Memphis or readmitting students who, since last attending the UofM, have attempted course work from another accredited institution of higher education, will be required to have their transcript/s sent to the Office of Admissions for evaluation. An admissions analyst will review the transcript and evaluate each course for equivalency to a course at the UofM. Some courses will have a direct equivalent and therefore, will receive credit for that class. Other courses may be evaluated and not have a direct equivalent - in those cases, credits will be assigned as electives. Exactly how each course fulfills degree program requirements will be determined by the student’s academic advisor. There may also be times where courses will not transfer at all.  Transfer credit evaluations will only be completed after a student has been fully admitted to the University of Memphis in a degree seeking status.
  2. Transfer credit evaluations are completed when a currently enrolled University of Memphis student opts to take a course at another institution for credit. In this situation, the student is required to meet with his/her advisor to determine the course equivalency prior to registering for the course at the other institution.

Transfer Credit in the GPA

Beginning Fall 2019, transfer hours and grades will be reflected in earned hours and applied to the Overall GPA and Overall Combined GPA. (Overall GPA is used to determine undergraduate graduation and athletic eligibility.  Overall Combined GPA is used to determine academic standing, financial aid, and scholarship eligibility, except for HOPE).

Note that during the period Summer 2015 through Summer 2019, transfer work is only reflected in earned hours but does not apply to the Overall GPA or Overall Combined GPA, in compliance with the Tennessee Board of Regents transfer work policy and academic catalogs at that time.

Any transfer work posted before Summer 2015 is reflected in earned hours and applied to the Overall GPA and Overall Combined GPA.
