ANTH 7255 - Applying Anthropology

Credit Hours: (3)
Description This course promotes the development of an engaged anthropological praxis through 1) surveying the history, ethics, and methods of applied anthropology, and 2) preparing for the implementation of successful practica that benefit both students and community partners. This course will review case studies of major applied projects to understand how people can make their training in anthropology work in a broad array of fields such as education, health and medicine, business and industry, environment, development, etc. The course focuses on the application of anthropological theories, methods, and ethics to students’ own research trajectories, which they will plan and develop through course assignments. This course asks the following questions: What does it mean to be an applied, engaged, public, action, or activist anthropologist? What ethical issues need to be considered in anthropological application? How can anthropological theories, methods, and ethics be implemented through research design?
