Description This course introduces students to the concepts and methods of community health assessment and the process of planning for health improvement. The course covers relevant community health topics including the nature of health and its determinants; the use of quantitative and qualitative methods to assess needs; data analysis; community mobilization and capacity building; and the impact of current national policy, including the Affordable Care Act, on community health improvement. Using secondary data, students will work in teams to develop elements of a community needs assessment for Shelby County. Findings and recommendations for community health improvement will be compiled into a final report.
