ARTH 7012 - African American-Diaspora Photographic Culture

Credit Hours: 3
Description This is a visual culture studies course designed to investigate the African American photographic experience from the nineteenth century to the contemporary. It explores the relationship between African Americans and the African diaspora and photography by examining blacks as subjects, creators, and theorists of a diverse range of photographic representation. The course incorporates analysis of daguerreotypes, installation, image-text collaborations, as well as traditions of portraiture, colonialist photography, street photography, social documentary, civil rights photography, photo-journalism and photographic imagery in popular cultures.
