PHYS 6056 - Extragalactic Astronomy Credit Hours: 3 Description An introduction to modern astronomy with emphasis on the structure and evolution of galaxies, active galactic nuclei and the early Universe. The goal is to show students how we can apply basic physical principles (gravity, fluid dynamics, electromagnetism, etc.) to understand the properties of astronomical objects. The topics covered include external galaxies, clusters of galaxies, supermassive black holes and their environments, active galactic nuclei, quasars, large-scale structure and the Big Bang theory. Numerous discussions, video demonstrations, and discovery-based laboratories further enrich the learning experience. Standard Letter
