CPSY 8000 - Helping Skills Credit Hours: 3 Description This experiential and didactic course is focused on developing foundational clinical skills that enable students to develop effective therapeutic relationships with a diverse clientele. Students will learn from lecture, expert therapist sessions, practice with peers, and reflections based on review of video tape. Specifically, this course will assist students in developing basic counselling skills (e.g., reflections, non-verbal attending behaviors), introduce more advanced therapeutic techniques (emotion and cognitive focused interventions), understand the role of supervision in their development as a therapist, and assist in developing documentation skills (e.g., treatment planning and progress notes). This course will prepare counseling psychology doctoral students to begin their first field placement. 0 PREREQUISITE(S): Admission into the Counseling Psychology doctoral program
