AAAS 3805 - Race and Religion in the US Credit Hours: 3 Description: In this course, we examine the complex intersection of race and religion in the United States historically and in the present day. This interdisciplinary class draws from religious studies, anthropology, and history, but is rooted in sociology. We develop an understanding of the concepts “race” and “religion,” unpacking their social construction and their social implications. We also investigate competing models of American identity in relation to religion, as one nation under God compared to a nation of religious freedom and tolerance, drawing out the implications of these framings for religious and racial minorities. Relatedly, this course will look at religion’s role in both racial suppression and racial freedom movements, including the role of the Black church in the Civil Rights Movement. We then explore how migration has impacted the demographic makeup of religion in the US, as well as the form of religion and religious practice, with special attention to the growth of religious minorities in the US.
