IVTH 1000 - PACE IV Therapy - 1000 Credit Hours: 1 Description: The IV Therapy Course is a non-credit continuing education offering that provides LPNs with basic concepts related to IV therapy. Topics addressed will include selection and use of IV equipment, proper patient identification, site selection and insertion. Additional topics such as IV-push medications, fluid management, addressing potential complications and discontinuation will be reviewed.
Proper procedure for performing IV therapy will be taught in a controlled, simulated environment. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be awarded a certificate of completion from the University of Memphis.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course the student should be able to:
- State the scope of practice for LPNs regarding IV therapy
- Identify and locate veins used as primary sites for IV infusions
- State three indications for use of IV infusions
- Identify types of infusion equipment
- States items necessary to assemble prior to initiating an IV
- Demonstrate knowledge of and application of appropriate aseptic technique
- State drugs and solutions commonly used in IV therapy and discussion their action, correct dosage and adverse effects
- Demonstrated steps for priming and hanging a primary and secondary IV infusion
- Calculate flow rate correctly and regulate selected infusions
- Identify potential complications related to IV therapy, and
- Outline the proper actions to be taken if complications occur
- Successfully demonstrate IV insertion and discontinuation
- State how you would monitor the effectiveness of IV therapy
