ANTH 1300 - Language, Culture, and Power** Credit Hours: 3 Description: Despite notions that language is just a neutral medium through which information is transmitted, an anthropological approach to language reveals that it actually does things in the world! This course provides an introduction to the study of language in social context and demonstrates the power of language to create and reinforce inequality, but also to make the world a more equitable place. Through course readings, lectures, and discussion, we will examine how language is embedded in power structures across a variety of cultures and investigate the role that language plays in both upholding and challenging systems.
