(3) One of two core PhD seminars for all entering students to the doctoral programs in the School of Public Health, this seminar is intended to provide the â€œbig pictureâ€ context in which public health and other health sciences research is conducted. The seminar focuses on four broad areas: (1) the philosophy of science, history of science, scientific revolutions and paradigms, and the scientific method; (2) the important role that theory plays in setting a research agenda and conducting research generallyâ€”and being engaged in public health research in particular; (3) the interdisciplinary nature of public health research and practice; and (4) scientific inquiry as a lifeâ€™s workâ€”reflecting on several individualâ€™s personal perspectives. PREREQUISITE(S): ECON 6810 or equivalent.
