American Sign Language Minor (18 hours)


The School of Communication Sciences and Disorders  offers a minor in American Sign Language (ASL). This program should be of interest to students in various disciplines across campus who are interested in learning and using ASL. The minor is intended to teach students the fundamentals of ASL as well as enrich students’ knowledge of the Deaf and Deaf Culture.

A minimum of 18 credit hours is required. The minor requires 9 credit hours of introductory and intermediate ASL, as well as 9 hours at the upper division level with choices of courses focusing on deaf culture and history; ASL for speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and educators; and psychological, sociological and educational perspectives of deafness.

Note:  Additional courses in ASL are available, but not required, including AUSP 1015 Fingerspelling Numbers and Community Experience  and AUSP 2020 Inter Amer Sign Language II  .
