Art History - European Tradition in Art Concentration, (B.A.)

Art History Major (B.A.)
Program objectives for a B.A. in Art History are: (a) to understand the scope of art in human culture; (b) to acquire the ability to write about art clearly and meaningfully; (c) to acquire knowledge of diverse visual cultures; (d) to acquire the ability to read, write and understand the major terms and concepts of art history; (e) to conduct original research in the discipline.
The Major (42 hours)
Completion of 36 semester hours in art history, including:
A minimum of 6 hours of studio art is also required. These courses can be taken from the studsio courses listed under Art-Studio Arts Concentration, (B.F.A.).
European Tradition in Art
The European tradition is an area of concentration within the B.A. in Art History, whose mission is to introduce students to the visual cultures of the Western world, from antiquity to the modern (and postmodern) age. The concentration offers coursework covering the diverse visual traditions and the variety of historical periods associated with Europe and the Americas. The concentration emphasizes that its students acquire the ability to read, write and understand the major concepts of art history and to conduct original research in the discipline.

Within the requirements for the major in Art History, students in this concentration need to complete:
An additional 9 hours ARTH 4000-level series
A maximum of two courses from the Museum Studies sequence (ARTH 4381 , ARTH 4386 , ANTH 4660 , or ANTH 4662 ) may be selected when meeting the remaining 9 hours ARTH 4000-level series.
