Computer Science, (Accelerated B.S./M.S.)

This 5-year program allows Computer Science majors begin the coursework for the M.S. degree early, counting up to 12 semester hours toward both B.S. and M.S. degrees.

University General Education Program (41 hours)


See Graduation from the University  for the University General Education Program requirements. Note the following requirements specified for the Computer Science major: Mathematics - MATH 1910 ; Natural Science - PHYS 2110 /PHYS 2111  and PHYS 2120 /PHYS 2121  or CHEM 1110 /CHEM 1111  and CHEM 1120 /CHEM 1121 , or BIOL 1110 /BIOL 1111  and BIOL 1120 /BIOL 1121 ; ECON 2020  is strongly recommended for the Social Science requirement.

The Major (63 hours)


Enrollment


Students who are within two semesters of earning the B.S. degree in Computer Science and have maintained an overall and COMP GPA of at least 3.0 may officially enroll in the program.

B.S. degree requirement


Students must satisfy the University General Education Program   and The Major requirements as described above, with the graduate course substitutions detailed in part (1) of the M.S. degree requirement below.

After enrolled students earn the Computer Science, General Concentration (B.S.)  , Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence Concentration (B.S.)  , Computer Science, Data Science Concentration (B.S.)   or Computer Science, Cybersecurity Concentration (B.S.)  , they must apply for full admission into the Graduate School and into the Master’s Program in Computer Science. The GRE requirement will be waived for students who have maintained an overall and COMP GPA of at least 3.0 at the time of earning the B.S. degree.

M.S. degree requirement


1. Complete 12 hours of graduate-level COMP courses to substitute for certain 3000/4000-level courses that are required by the COMP major. These 12 hours are counted toward both the B.S. and M.S. degrees.

At most 6 hours of these can be 6000-level courses. COMP 6001, 6005, 6014, 6030, 6040, 6270, 6601, 6901, and 6911 cannot be used for these 6 hours.

At least 6 hours of these must be 7000-level courses. Allowable substitutions are: COMP 7712 for 4030; 7212 for 4270; 7612 for 4601; 7327 for 4420; 7125 for 4430; 7720 for 4720; 7745 for 4745. Furthermore, any 7000-level course can substitute for a COMP elective.

2. Complete 21 semester hours of 7000-level courses, which must include at least 3 hours of COMP 7980 (Master’s Project) or 7996 (Master’s Thesis).

Electives


Electives must be chosen to bring the total number of semester hours to 120. 

Students should talk to their advisors to determine most suitable courses for them. 

Computer Science Honors Designation


A student will earn the designation “with Honors in Computer Science” upon graduation having complied with the following requirements:

  1. Be admitted into the Computer Science Honors Program by the Department upon formal request for consideration by the student;
  2. Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and a GPA of at least 3.60 in Computer Science (COMP) courses satisfying degree requirements;  
  3. Complete fifteen (15) credit hours in courses designated “Honors” in the the Computer Science program and satisfying degree requirements;
  4. Take honors sections of both COMP 1900  and COMP 2150  (core sequence);
  5. Take at least three (3) credit hours from the following courses as honors sections: COMP 4882   Capstone Project, COMP 4901   Independent Study, COMP 4980   Senior Thesis.

MPAccelerated B.S./M.S. students have up to 6 semesters to complete COMP 7980 (Masters Project), after the Senior Year. In each semester, they must register for COMP 7980 for either 1 hour, 3 hours, or 6 hours.
