School Counseling Graduate Certificate

The University of Memphis’s Certificate in School Counseling is intended for those individuals who have obtained a graduate degree in counseling from a program accredited by The Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The program goal is to complete the requirements to obtain Tennessee Licensure as a School Counselor.

Admission Requirements


  1. Hold a graduate degree in counseling from a program that was accredited by CACREP at the time of graduation;
  2. Official undergraduate and graduate transcripts of all academic work completed;
  3. Submit a Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score if graduate GPA is below 3.5 (strongly recommended);
  4. Complete a program admission application including goals essay;
  5. Provide three letters of academic and/or professional reference; and
  6. Complete an interview with the school counseling coordinator.

Program Requirements


Total Credit Hours: 15 minimum (18 if special education/disability course needed)

The school counseling coordinator will complete a transcript review to ensure that all requirements for licensure have been met; therefore, courses in addition to the following may be required.
