Secondary Education Graduate Certificate

The graduate certificate program is proposed as the post-baccalaureate component of an accelerated teacher licensure program. The five courses will be offered to complete the requirements for a license in a Secondary Education subject (e.g., English, History, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, etc.). Students enrolling in the certificate must have completed the courses in the K-12 Education Minor as part of their undergraduate program of study. This pathway to licensure has been approved by the Tennessee Department of Education

Admission Requirements


Prior to admission to the certificate program, all students must have successfully completed the following courses as required in the K-12 Education Minor:

  • ICL 3000 Principles of Teaching
  • EDPR 3302 Child/Adolescent Development
  • ICL 3333 Student Assessment/Instructional Decision Making
  • ICL 4001 Teaching/Diverse Environment
  • IDT 3600 Technology in Education
  • SPED 2000 Foundations for Exceptional Learners

Admissions to the Secondary Education Certificate program will be completed on a rolling basis. 

Track A

Students with a degree in English, math, science, history, or World Languages through the College of Arts and Sciences 

  1. Must have an undergraduate GPA of 2.75
  2. Must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program

  3. Must secure a teaching position prior to beginning certificate coursework


Track B

Students with a degree other than English, math, science, history, or World Languages through the College of Arts and Sciences 

  1. Must have an undergraduate GPA of 2.75
  2. Must pass the Praxis II content exam for the area they plan to teach
  3. Must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program

  4. Must secure a teaching position prior to beginning certificate coursework

Graduation Requirements:


In order to graduate with the certificate, students must complete all five required courses with an overall GPA of 3.0 and no grades lower than C.
 

Additional requirements must be met in order to become eligible for the Tennessee Professional Teacher license.

Retention Requirements:


Students must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 in all graduate certificate coursework, with no grades lower than C.
