MUAP 4261 - ST: Flute History and Literature

Credit Hours: 3
Description: This course will examine the history of the development and performance practice of western European classical flute from the Renaissance period to the present day. We will examine the technological development of the instrument, from the one-keyed Baroque flute through the development of the Boehm-style flute and to technological advancements happening with today’s flute makers. We will examine key repertoire for solo flute throughout the history of the canon of western classical music and consider how the construction and capabilities of the flute at various times in history affect how a composer wrote for the instrument. Finally, through understanding prominent solo flute works throughout the canon, the class will compare performance practices for these well-known pieces and consider how to approach their performance and their pedagogy. Prerequisite(s): Permission of Instructor
