ARTH 4031 - ST: Art & Architecture of the US South

Credit Hours: 3
Description: This course will focus on the arts and craft (including painting, sculpture, prints, photography, furniture, ceramics, material culture, and architecture, among others) produced in the southern regions of the United States from the colonial era to the present. The majority of the content, however, will concern pre-Civil War periods. We will ask, does southern art differ from that produced elsewhere in the United States? If so, how and why? The main objective of the course is to develop an awareness of the general history of art produced in the southern regions of the United States, but also to form a contextual basis for it. Therefore, issues of race, class, and gender will figure heavily into our investigations, especially the relevance of slavery and emancipation to the works studied. This seminar is entirely discussion based. Students will discuss assigned readings each week. The major project of the semester is a research paper. $60 per credit hour
