Master of Arts in Economics


Program Admission


  • Satisfactory performance on the Graduate Record Examination or the Graduate Management Admission Test.
  • Satisfactory undergraduate grade point average.
  • Successful completion of at least one semester of calculus (MATH 1830, MATH 1910 or equivalent) and at least one semester of statistics (SCMS 2710, MATH 1530 or equivalent).
  • Suggested, but not required, additional semesters of calculus (MATH 1920 or equivalent); intermediate microeconomics (ECON 3310 or equivalent) and intermediate macroeconomics (ECON 3320 or equivalent); matrix or linear algebra (MATH 3242 or equivalent).
  • International students: satisfactory performance on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or equivalent.

Program Requirements


Course Work


33 credit hours of graduate coursework consisting of the following:

Economics Core (21 credit hours)

  1. ECON 6315  
  2. ECON 6810  
  3. ECON 7125  
  4. ECON 7300  
  5. ECON 7310  
  6. ECON 7320  
  7. ECON 7810  

Elective Courses (12 credit hours)

  • Maximum 9 credit hours at the 6000 level, with the rest at the 7000 or 8000 level.
  • May be offered by other related departments at the graduate level and must be approved by the MA coordinator.
  • Courses in the core MBA curriculum are not eligible.

Additional Requirements


The student must fulfill one of the following requirements:

Examination Option:

  • Each candidate must pass a written examination in economic theory.
  • A maximum of two attempts within a year of the first attempt is permitted.

Thesis Option:

  • Each candidate must register for at least 3 (but no more than 6) thesis hours.
  • Must write and defend a thesis under the guidance of a faculty committee.
  • Must register for thesis credit each academic semester until the thesis is completed.

GPA Requirement


  • Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on all graduate coursework.
  • No more than 7 hours of “C+,” “C,” or “C-” will be counted towards the degree.
