Engineering Management (MS)


Engineering management is a discipline that prepares students to plan and manage industrial, logistical, transportation, and manufacturing enterprises through the application of engineering principles. The MS in Engineering Management provides an opportunity for graduates of BS programs in engineering to prepare themselves for careers as managers. The curriculum provides further technical training for engineers, as well as basic management instruction. Graduates of the Masters of Science in Engineering Management program will be able to:

  1. Manage the cost, schedule, risk, and technical aspects of a project.  

  2. Manage teams and individuals by using basic management, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. 

  3. Use financial information to make decisions. 

  4. Apply advanced engineering and management knowledge in a relevant area.

Program Requirements


Satisfactory completion of 33 credit hours of graduate course work and a passing grade on a comprehensive examination, both approved by the department.

Retention Requirements


All students enrolled in the Masters of Science in Engineering Management program are expected to attain high academic achievement in all courses taken. The criteria listed below will be used to determine retention status of students enrolled in the program.

  1. Students who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 (“B”) or higher will be considered to be in good standing if no more than 7 hours of “C-,” “C” or “C+” or lower have been earned.

  2. Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 at the end of each semester of enrollment in all course work at The University of Memphis, including all course work for the program, and all 7000 level course work. Any student not meeting these conditions will be placed on probation by the department.

  3. A student will be permitted no more than 7 hours of “C-,” “C” or “C+” or lower in graduate courses taken at The University of Memphis. A student will be dismissed at the end of the semester in which a third grade of “C-,” “C” or “C+” or lower is earned.

  4. Courses applied to the MS degree program requirements must have the advisor’s approval.

Graduation Requirements


  1. Students must pass a comprehensive exam administered by the program faculty.
  2. Students must have an overall 3.0 GPA in courses in the program.
