Public Relations Minor

The minor in public relations introduces students to the skills and tools of the field of public relations. Its core focused on the breadth of public relations while its electives allow students to specialize in a specific area of public relations.

To complete the minor in Public Relations, a student must earn 18 hours of credit in the Department of Journalism & Strategic Media meeting the following conditions:

• PBRL 3421 - Intro to Strategic Writing Credit Hours: (3)
• PBRL 3431 - Public Relations Writing Credit Hours: (3)
• PBRL 4706 - Public Relations Ethics and Advocacy Credit Hours: (3)

• JRSM 3905 - Graphics for Strategic Media Credit Hours: (3)
• PBRL 3409 - Public Relations Case Studies Credit Hours: (3)
• PBRL 4301 - Event Planning for PR Credit Hours: (3)
• PBRL 4421 - Crisis Comm in Public Relation Credit Hours: (3)
• PBRL 4430 - Media Relations Credit Hours: (3)
• PBRL 4431 - Entertainment PR Credit Hours: (3)
• PBRL 4432 - Nonprofit Public Relations Credit Hours: (3)
• STRM 3250 - Audience & Analytics Credit Hours: 3
• STRM 4290 - Campaign Research & Planning Credit Hours: 3
• STRM 4295 - Campaigns Implementation & Eval Credit Hours: 3

• Coursework for all minors will be determined by the student in conference with the advisor with the approval of the department chair.

   

  Students with a major in either Creative Mass Media or Journalism can satisfy the requirements of the public relations minor with PBRL 3421, PBRL 3431 and 3 hours of any other PBRL course in addition to the shared Journalism and Strategic Media core of JRSM 1750, 2121, and 4700. Students majoring in Strategic Media are not eligible for the public relations minor.
