The Accelerated Bachelor’s-Master’s (ABM) BFA in Architecture to M.Arch program allows outstanding architecture undergraduates to begin the coursework for the Master of Architecture during their fourth year of undergraduate study.
Students are encouraged to begin planning to enter the Accelerated BFA-Arch/M.Arch program early in their undergraduate studies, in consultation with their departmental academic advisor. Working with the undergraduate adviser and the graduate director, undergraduates selected into this program begin a specific course of study that allows them to complete their BFA-Arch degree while they also begin the coursework toward their M.Arch. Up to 12 hours of graduate coursework may be applied to both the undergraduate and graduate programs. To apply, students must have a minimum 3.25 overall grade point average. Undergraduate students who are selected into the program must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA each semester until completion of the BFA-Arch degree.
How to Apply:
In the spring of the third-year of the BFA-Arch program, the student will submit a portfolio and goal statement to the Director of Graduate Studies in architecture. The applicant will then meet with the graduate director for an interview. The graduate director will make a recommendation to the graduate faculty regarding the student’s application. If the application is approved, the student will meet with their adviser to create a graduation plan for their last two semesters. This plan will include up to 12 graduate credits that will then count toward both the BFA-Arch and M.Arch degrees.
Before beginning the M.Arch program, the student must formally apply to the UofM graduate school and be admitted by the faculty. ABM admission or completion is no guarantee of admission into or progression in a graduate program of study.
Program of Study:
In the ABM program, students are expected to complete coursework at the 6000 and 7000 levels. The plan of study below includes applicable courses and lists the undergraduate requirements they would satisfy in parenthesis. Other courses may be substituted with permission of the Director of Graduate Studies in architecture.
