Political Science, Pre-Law Concentration (B.A.)

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: College of Arts & Sciences

Lawyers play a crucial role in evaluating, interpreting, and understanding the law. Whether those laws are local ordinances, state legislation, federal regulations, or international treatises, the law touches our day-to-day lives in innumerable ways. Quality lawyers help ensure the law is upheld. They understand its meaning, interpretation, and consequences. And they work tirelessly to protect and uphold the rights and liberties of citizens. The skills and knowledge acquired through the Pre-Law concentration in Political Science help prepare students for careers in the legal profession. Competent graduates develop the skills necessary for success in law school and in their future practice.

The B.A. in Political Science with Pre-Law concentration aims to provide students with: (a) a basic understanding of the legal institutions and processes in the United States and other countries; (b) a basic understanding of the ways that international law governs both the interactions between states and their domestic policies; (c) a basic understanding of the development of legal thought and interpretation; (d) the ability evaluate and understand the law and legal texts; (e) the ability to analyze and explain legal processes, procedures, and outcome; (f) the critical reading, thinking, and writing skills necessary for careers as lawyers, paralegals, and lobbyists.

Electives must be chosen to bring the total number of hours to 120.
