Description of Program
The degree program in Commercial Aviation prepares persons for careers as airline pilots, or in a variety of aviation-related fields, such as corporate aviation, general aviation, aviation-related business, airport operations, and governmental regulation of aviation. It does so by offering studies in aviation, management, business operations, human resources, transportation, logistics and aviation administration. These studies are combined with flight labs, experiential learning, and internships in an aviation setting. Aviation training is provided by professional aviation instruction certified by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Note: Aviation students must have a Valid Class A FAA Aviation Medical Certificate conducted by an FAA medical examiner. The exam usually costs about $120 and lasts 5 years. This should be completed no later than the student’s first flight. A background check is also required.

UNIV 3900 Experiential Learning Credit
Experiential Learning Credit may be granted for college level knowledge and understanding related to the student’s area of study. This credit may be gained from work experience, life experience, or non-college instruction in one of the following ways: 1) pre-assessed military transcripts, 2) pre-assessed professional training, licensure, or certifications or 3) student developed learning portfolio reflective of their learning experiences which is assessed for credit by a faculty member. General Education (35-41 hours)

See University General Education Program for the University General Education Program requirements. Students who have completed one year of American History in high school are exempted from the six credit-hour History General Education Program requirement; otherwise, students will have to meet the History requirement.

College Requirements

Thematic Studies (6 Hours)

Students complete a total of 6 hours in a University College thematic studies course(s). These courses are designed to broaden a student’s knowledge of significant AVIA themes.

AVIA Thematic Studies Course are the Following:

Senior Project (3 hours)

The senior project is a student’s culminating experience or capstone designed to synthesize and integrate the content of a student’s program of study.
For this concentration, the senior project is:

General Electives (11 – 17 hours)

Electives will be chosen to bring the total number of hours to 120 with a minimum of 42 upper-division hours.

Minimum Requirements for Graduation

• Students must complete at least 60 hours from a 4-year institution.
• Students must complete at least 42 hours of upper-division credit (3000 or 4000-level).
• Students must complete at least 30 of the last 60 hours through the University of Memphis.
• Students must complete at least 9 graded hours in the major at the University of Memphis.
