Graduation
To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering, the student must satisfy University and College requirements, obtain a minimum 2.0 grade point average on all work completed, and obtain a minimum grade of “C-” in all engineering, mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry courses used to satisfy degree requirements. Waiver of departmental graduation requirements for exceptional circumstances will be granted only upon approval of both the department chair and the Dean of the College of Engineering (or designee).
Honors Program
The Biomedical Engineering Honors Program is for highly motivated and high-achieving students, and provides special opportunities to advance the career and professional development of the student. The program aims to develop student talents, interests, and abilities within a curriculum, as well as encourage independence and creativity.
Students are eligible for the honors program in Biomedical Engineering if they have, and maintain, a cumulative GPA of 3.4 with at least junior standing, and have received approval from the departmental honors committee. The honors program in Biomedical Engineering requires a minimum of 10 hours of upper-division biomedical engineering honors courses, including both BIOM 4800 BME Honors seminar, and completion of an honors thesis (BIOM 4999 ). Students who complete the honors program and the requirements for the B S in Biomedical Engineering will be recognized at the commencement ceremony by having their degree conferred “With Honors in Biomedical Engineering.” Honors designation will also appear on the student’s diploma and academic transcript.
University General Education Program (36 hours)
See Graduation from the University for University General Education Program requirements. Note the following requirements are specified for this program:
Social/Behavioral Sciences:
Must be taken in addition to 3 hours from the other specified choices
History:
American history waived for B S in Biomedical Engineering.students who have completed one unit of American history in high school.
College and Degree Requirements (26 hours)
Natural Science (8 hours)
Collateral Course (7 hours)
Completion of 42 hours from
Completion of 21 hours of
Completion of 21 hours of BIOM, Engineering and Technical electives approved by the advisor. At least 6 hours must be satisfied with BIOM electives. Nine hours of Engineering electives must be chosen from upper division engineering courses including BIOM, CIVL, EECE, and MECH courses and TECH 4472. Six hours of Technical electives may be chosen from upper division courses in BIOL, BIOM, CHEM, EECE, MATH, MECH, PHYS and TECH. Courses at this level in other departments can be chosen with permission of the chair or the chair’s designee. Some courses to meet these requirements are:
Policy on repeated courses:
Students must earn a grade of at least “C-” in all BIOM courses applied toward the major, and in all required engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematical courses. BIOM, BIOL, CHEM, MATH and PHYS courses applicable toward the major may not be taken more than three times.
Any BIOM course and in all required engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematical courses applicable toward the major may be repeated once to earn a minimum grade of “C-“. To repeat a course a second time, a student must apply for and receive special permission from the department Undergraduate Studies Committee. Application information is available from one of the Academic Coordinators. A student may not attempt the same BIOM or any required engineering, chemistry, physics and mathematical courses more than three times, regardless of where it was taken. Courses cross-listed with BIOM (e.g. BIOL 4110 , MECH 4365 ) are also subject to this course repetition policy.
Residence Requirements:
Biomedical Engineering requires that 12 of the last 60 hours required by the University for residency be taken as upper-division engineering courses in the Herff College of Engineering and, specifically, include BIOM 4760 , BIOM 4782 , and BIOM 4784 .

Accelerated BS/MS Program
The Accelerated Bachelor’s to Master’s (ABM) program in Biomedical Engineering allows outstanding undergraduates to begin the coursework for the Master of Science (M S) in Biomedical Engineering during their undergraduate studies. Students are encouraged to begin planning to enter the ABM program early in their undergraduate career, in consultation with their academic advisor.
To be eligible, students must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average and must have completed at least 64 credit hours of undergraduate coursework towards the B S in Biomedical Engineering. To apply, students must (1) complete an interview with the undergraduate academic coordinator, (2) request a letter of sponsorship from a program faculty member, and (3) submit a statement of interest to the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Qualified students will be admitted to the ABM program when they have no more than 34 credit hours remaining to complete the B S in Biomedical Engineering.
Undergraduate students who are selected into the program must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA each semester until completion of the B S degree. ABM undergraduates must also apply to the Graduate School for the ABM program, which allows them to take graduate courses as an undergraduate student. Working with the undergraduate and graduate academic coordinators, ABM undergraduates may register for and substitute graduate level courses for undergraduate electives or take and substitute graduate versions of required undergraduate courses. However, any graduate coursework will not apply to undergraduate GPA.
To continue in the program past the B S in Biomedical Engineering, students must apply for full admission into the M S program of The University of Memphis-University of Tennessee Health Science Center Joint Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering.
