Admission

To apply, students must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average. Applicants must submit two reference letters, a statement of purpose, a writing sample, and a copy of their transcripts to the director of graduate studies. Each applicant’s file will be reviewed by the undergraduate advisors and the graduate studies committee.

Students must also apply to the Graduate School for the Accelerated B.A./M.A. program, which allows them to take graduate courses in History. To continue in the program past the B.A., students must apply for full admission into the Graduate School and into the History department’s M.A. program.

Only in ABM programs, up to 12 hours of graduate course work can count towards both the undergraduate and graduate programs. However, any graduate coursework will not apply to undergraduate GPA.

Residence – 30 of the last 60 hours must be taken at University of Memphis; at least 60 hours must be at a four-year institution; transfer students must earn at least 6 hours of a major at UM and at least 3 hours of a minor at UM.

Must take HIST 7070 (Research Seminar)

No more than 9 credit hours at the 6000-level

No more than 24 credits in the same geographical field (non-history courses included)
