Art History Major (B.A.)

Program objectives for a B.A. in Art History are: (a) to understand the scope of art in human culture; (b) to acquire the ability to write about art clearly and meaningfully; (c) to acquire knowledge of diverse visual cultures; (d) to acquire the ability to read, write and understand the major terms and concepts of art history; (e) to conduct original research in the discipline.

University General Education Program (41 hours)

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) (6-9 hours)

The Bachelor of Arts requirements are in addition to the University General Education Program requirements.

The Major (42 hours)

Completion of 36 semester hours in art history courses, including two courses selected from

• ARTH 2010 - World Art I
• ARTH 2020 - World Art II
• ARTH 2030 - Visual Studies/Indigenous Arts (see concentration requirements for specific selection)
• 9 courses (27 hours) selected from the ARTH 4000-level series (see concentration requirements for specific selections)
• ARTH 4195 - Proseminar Art History
• A minimum of 6 hours of studio art is also required. These courses can be taken from the studio courses listed under Art - Studio Arts Concentration, (B.F.A.)  

African Diaspora Arts and Visual Culture

African Diaspora Arts and Visual Culture is an interdisciplinary area of concentration within the B.A. in Art History. Its mission is to introduce students to the theoretical frameworks and methodologies for approaching the study of the diverse arts and visual cultures of peoples of African descent. Art and visual culture are examined in relation to the broader African diaspora, whereby students acquire analytical skills that enhance their understanding of historical and contemporary issues from a global perspective. Students supplement the Art History curriculum with courses drawn from a variety of disciplines. The program objectives for the concentration in African Diaspora Arts and Visual Culture emphasize research employing original sources, the ability to think and read critically, the skill of writing meaningfully, and the application of acquired knowledge in the context of cultural institutions such as museums, galleries, and historical sites.

Electives (18-19 hours)

Completion of courses to bring the total number of hours to 120 semester hours.

**Students presenting a language to meet University admission requirements cannot receive credit for 1010 in that language.
